What is the best drone for filming?

Videographers and filmmakers could only have dreamt of having the ability to capture aerial footage for their projects going back 15 or so years. Back then if a video production required aerial imagery, then it was a helicopter and a specialist aerial cameraman or videographer you needed. There is no doubt that the drone has revolutionised the job of the videographer and filmmaker. In 2025 in London and the rest of the UK, it’s fairly easy to capture your own aerial videos even as a one man band videographer. The drone is one of several major advancements in technology that has drastically improved the quality of video productions and opened the creative possibilities for videographers. There are now a huge array of drones to choose from, so it begs the question, what is the best drone for filming?

Size matters when it comes to drone filming

There are so many incredible drones to choose from. Of course DJI is one of the top leaders in this field. DJI are a leader in camera tech, gimbals and drones. They have a wide range of drones available which are suitable for all kinds of filming. The larger drones offer higher quality than the smaller ones along with improved features such as good low light performance due to larger sensors, higher frame rates, increased range, increased battery life and also advanced collision avoidance. The smaller drones such as the DJI-Mini4 are less feature rich but also fall into the sub 250g category. So does weight matter when it comes to drones? Yes it does, big time! Smaller drones in the C0 category (below 250g) have many less restrictions when it comes to filming in London and the UK. These are specifically important when you’re flying near people and buildings. For most corporate video productions a DJI Mini4 drone would be of sufficient quality and have minimal restrictions. For me this makes the DJI Mini4 my top choice for videographers when it comes to drone filming.

The future - The DJI Mini5

There are now rumours about the DJI-Mini5 drone which is tipped to add improved collision avoidance, a larger sensor for better image quality and which is better in low light and also increased frame rates. More than that, it’s been said this will be in a sub 250g package meaning it will fall into the C0 category. No wonder videographers in London and across the UK are talking a lot about this drone. I know if the rumoured specs turn out to be true, then i’ll be pre-ordering my own DJI Mini5 drone. You can check out the laws and rules for flying drone in the Uk on the CAA website here. Happy filming and be sure to come back soon for more videographer tips.
