Kingston University London– Graduation Video Production
Capturing real student experiences through cinematic documentary filmmaking
Graduation is one of the most significant moments in a student's university journey. For Kingston University London, the brief was to create a powerful, documentary-style promotional film featuring graduating students, their experiences and the benefits of studying at the university.
The aim was to combine authentic student interviews with beautiful cinematic footage, capturing both the excitement of graduation and the personal stories behind it.
Over five filming days, we created a film that brought these experiences together while documenting the atmosphere of a live graduation.
The challenge: Capturing moments that can't be repeated
Unlike a traditional promotional shoot, graduation doesn't offer second takes. Students walking to collect their certificates, crossing the stage and celebrating with their families are real moments happening in real time. Being in the right position, with the right framing, was essential.
We also had limited time with each graduate. They were there to enjoy a major personal milestone, not spend their entire day on a film shoot. With taht in mind, our approach needed to be efficient, flexible and respectful of their celebrations while still delivering the cinematic quality Kingston University wanted.
Planning the shoot around the students
Careful pre-production made the difference on this project. Before filming, we identified a range of locations around Kingston that would give us visual variety without requiring students to travel unnecessarily or spend too long away from their families.
These included quieter moments such as having graduation gowns and caps fitted, as well as picturesque riverside locations where we could capture natural, relaxed footage of the graduates with families or partners. We also planned alternative positions along the river to make the most of changing natural light throughout the day.
Having these locations mapped out beforehand allowed us to move quickly between setups and adapt when schedules changed.
Cinematic interviews at Kingston University's Town House building
Kingston University's striking modern architecture provided another opportunity to give the film a distinctive visual style.
We used the university's Town House building on Penrhyn Road as a backdrop for student interviews, framing contributors against its impressive concrete pillars and architectural lines.
These carefully chosen locations gave the interviews a strong visual identity while keeping the students and their personal experiences at the centre of the film.
The result was a balance of considered cinematography and natural, honest storytelling.
Staying agile during a live graduation
Even with detailed planning, graduation filming requires quick decisions.
One of the biggest technical challenges was capturing each featured student receiving their award on stage, then immediately moving out of the dark ceremony hall to film them walking along a bright, window-lined corridor to collect their physical degree certificate. With no opportunity for a second take, this required an almost instantaneous change in camera exposure. By scouting both spaces beforehand and knowing the appropriate exposure settings for each, I could make the adjustment quickly and capture both moments as they unfolded.
Schedules also shifted on the day, students became available at different times and natural light changed throughout the day. Because we'd prepared multiple interview and B-roll locations in advance, we could respond to these changes without compromising the overall visual approach.
We also remained conscious that the graduates were celebrating with their families. Our filming needed to fit around their day, rather than the other way around.
That balance between preparation and flexibility was key to capturing genuine moments without making the production feel intrusive.
The Final Deliverables
Across five filming days, we captured student interviews, live graduation moments and cinematic footage around the university and Kingston riverside.
The production delivered a hero film that promoted the Kingston experience, combining authentic student testimonials with cinematic graduation footage. In addition to this we also delivered a colour graded collection of interview footage and B-roll, giving Kingston University's social media team additional material to use in future content.
This meant the university received not only a finished promotional film but also a valuable library of professionally captured footage for ongoing communications.
The Result
The finished film brought together real student voices, the energy of graduation and the distinctive surroundings of Kingston University.
It's a project that demonstrates how thoughtful pre-production and an agile filming approach can turn a busy, unpredictable live event into a compelling promotional story.
