Welcome to the UK

Project

Paul Bates Studios created this documentary-style charity impact film for Welcome to the UK, showcasing how their support services help newcomers build confidence, learn English and create a sense of belonging within their communities.

Telling the story of a community built on welcome and belonging

Welcome to the UK provides support, advice and opportunities for newcomers to the UK, helping people feel welcomed, supported and empowered as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

Through services including English classes, childcare provision, community activities and days out, Welcome to the UK creates a safe and inclusive environment where people can learn, connect and build a sense of belonging.

The aim of this project was to create a film that showcased the incredible work of the organisation and the positive impact it has on the lives of the people it supports.

Funded by arts organisation Metal, the film was created to highlight how community-led projects can help people overcome challenges, build confidence and feel connected to their new surroundings.

The challenge: sharing personal stories with sensitivity

Many of the people involved in the film had experienced significant challenges before arriving in the UK, including conflict, displacement and difficult personal circumstances.

The challenge was to tell these stories honestly while ensuring the film focused on hope, opportunity and the strength of the community that Welcome to the UK has created.

Working with people who had different levels of English, and some who were not confident speaking on camera, required a thoughtful and sensitive approach.

The goal was never to focus on vulnerability alone, but to celebrate people’s journeys and the positive impact of having access to support, friendship and a welcoming community.

Creating an authentic documentary-style charity film

We approached the project with a documentary filmmaking style, allowing the people involved to share their experiences naturally and authentically.

By capturing everyday moments — from English classes and community activities to conversations and shared experiences, the film showed the many ways Welcome to the UK helps people feel connected and supported.

Rather than creating a film about people who had lost everything, the focus was on resilience, new beginnings and the importance of community.

Filming with people from diverse backgrounds

A key part of the production was creating a comfortable environment where everyone felt valued and able to participate.

When filming with people who may not speak English as their first language, patience, trust and communication are essential. The production approach allowed contributors the time and space they needed to tell their stories in their own way.

The result was a film that feels genuine and human, reflecting the warmth, diversity and sense of belonging that Welcome to the UK provides.

The result: celebrating connection and community

The finished film gave Welcome to the UK a powerful way to communicate the impact of their work, showcasing the services they provide and the community they have built.

It demonstrates how support networks can transform people’s experiences when settling into a new country, helping individuals not only access practical support but also develop friendships, confidence and a feeling of belonging.

Through documentary storytelling, the film celebrates the people behind the organisation and highlights the positive change created through compassion, inclusion and community.
