Defining your style as a videographer
London has a great variety of videographers to choose from. Often clients will choose a videographer based on previous work. A similar piece of work will aid a client in understanding that a certain videographer can deliver what they want. So as a filmmaker, maybe you would like to target a specific genre which will help you in defining your style as a videographer. However, maybe you dont want to limit your video to work to let’s say just corporate. Maybe you would like to create corporate films alongside fashion videos and documentary work. So how can this be achieved when the styles are so different?
Using experience to define style
If you work in one specific genre, you will, over time, most likely become an expert in filming that genre. You would understand the nuisances in how the camera moves and how to make the audience feel a certain way. However, is this a limited outlook? What is stopping a videographer from becoming an expert in several genres. This also offers a huge benefit in that different clients looking for different films could still come to you and see you as the expert. As a result this could lead to more work. More than this, it leads to you becoming a much more experienced videographer. A filmmaker who enjoys their work because it has is much variety. Once you have this knowledge you can also mix styles and create something fresh and new.
The long game
Of course, gaining this experience can take some time and it is no doubt a long game. I have been working as videographer and filmmaker for over 15 years. Over this time I have developed an understanding of several fields within videography. The outcome of this is that it has set me up for an interesting varied career with plenty of work. The take away is that limiting yourself to one specific field within film and video production is not always the best choice.
